Carol - WE DID TOO!!!! You and I are on the same page, lady. I co-ran the awards last year. I wrote about it in some detail here ...

http://adiaryofamom.wordpress.com/2010/06/23/circle-of-gratitude/

I couldn't agree more that it is so, so important to recognize the people who work so hard and who truly change lives.

After reading all of these wonderful responses, I just wanted to mention our experience in our school district. A group of us were very involved in our SEPTA (Special Education PTA). My very dear fellow parents (the lucky ones) started a program in our school district where we honored our staff because of what they did for our kids. People who touched our lives...made life better for our children. They were nominated by parents and kids. At the end of the school year we had a reception for all of the families, the teachers and administrators. The nomination letters would be read ..not a dry eye in the house. There was a wide variety of people recognized from the bus driver to the aide to the music teacher to the custodian to the teacher to the secretary, etc. etc. Both as a parent and a teacher there is no greater recognition than being recognized by the families you have touched. We need to honor these people. Everything is so from the heart..the sincerity..to care that much about people who are not your very own family...Thank God everyday for those people in our lives.
