I’m going!
Holy crap on toast, people.
I’m going!
OK, some background …
It’s been a tough few days around here. The kids are fine, our health is good (torn calf muscle and a little under-the-weather-ness aside), but the weight of life’s external worries has been particularly heavy the past few days. It’s just been, well – let’s just say – it’s just BEEN.
But today – just now in fact – something miraculous happened.
I got an e-mail from Brooke’s private speech therapist, Miss S. You may remember Miss S. She had her twelve minutes of fame here not long ago. Yes, twelve. For the uninitiated, just know this – we LOVE Miss S.
Say it with me, “WE LOVE MISS S.”
So the well-loved Miss S wrote to say that she’d seen the post I’d written yesterday about Michelle Garcia Winner’s sold out two-day conference in October. She explained that she is registered for both days. She proposed (proposed – like I’d say no?) letting me go in her place on either of the days. She wrote,
As you have said, Social Thinking is a great resource that [Brooke] is using so nicely. And having gone to Michelle’s conference last year, hearing her talk about it and give examples is so incredibly helpful. I don’t know about you, but I always learn more by hearing someone talk about it first hand than reading about it in a book. Since you have the opportunity and necessity of fielding more challenging social situations at home than I do in my office, I think it is important that you go.
Could you just cry? OK, maybe not. Maybe that’s just me. But seriously, who does that? Who gives up a spot at a conference that they so obviously value so much? Who recognizes and acknowledges that we as parents often face more complex challenges at home? Who offers up help? Who does that?
Miss S does.
I told her that it was a good thing that Luau was bringing Brooke into her office today. If it had been me, I might not have been able to stop hugging her long enough for them to accomplish anything.
I’m going!
Thank you, Miss S!
We LOVE Miss S. She is obviously a keeper!!
I can hardly wait to read what you have to say about the conference!
she really sounds wonderful. WE LOVE MISS S.
michelle garcia winner is also great. you’re great. luau: great.
it’s a blog with just all sorts of lovely people.
Happy!
How wonderful!!
Who does that? A professional who a) really cares about one little girl and wants her parents to understand as well, and b) who really cares about others knowing about how to help and knowing how valuable your blog and your contacts are. THAT is a special educator!
Kudos to her- and SQUEEEEAL that you get to go!
you know what I am going to say….Ms S. rocks, you rock, the kids rock, the whole damn lot of you rocks! Have a blast…as I said in my fb post just a few minutes ago..if you keep yourself open, things will come! Enjoy for all of us!
S~xo
What goes around comes around, Jess. You bless and you get blessed.
Wonderful!
Jess, can you tell me which books to get? This all sounds so helpful and I have never heard of it? If you could point me in the right direction -thx so much-
sue – i’ve asked michelle to weigh in and offer some advice. as i said on a comment on the original post, i have been extraordinarily lucky in that the social thinking curriculum has largely been spoon-fed to us by the school, so i haven’t delved into the books. (and the kid-centered books have so far been a bit too advanced for brooke.) hopefully we will hear from her office soon with some guidance. just didn’t want you to think i was ignoring you!!
WE LOVE MISS S!
Jess – could you also enlighten me about this? We’re in the P.L.A.Y. project and are seeing great results, but our little guy is 1) 3 and 2) still nonverbal (lots of attempts, though!), so I don’t know if (based on the site for Social Thinking) he’s a good candidate right now.
Huzzah for Miss S!
molly – please see my response to sue, above. thanks!!
We need a whole lot more of Miss S in the world.
Woot! (What? Doesn’t that kind of say it all??
)
you know i think it does.
Terrific, Sweetheart! I’m so happy for you!
I love you,
Mom
That’s awesome!!
That is absolutely wonderful!
We LOVE Miss S!!!!!!
Ummm she is the best EVER!!!!
Oh my goodness! Fabulous! Miss S, you rock!
Oh, yeah, I’m crying! Miss S is wonderful!
We were introduced to Michelle’s work many years ago in a social thinking group in the East Bay. It all made SO much sense to me, but have never heard her speak. We definitely still use and pass on a lot of the lingo. My current favorite books are the Superflex series. Oscar (9, PWS) loves and responds to it…we’re always helping him identify and take on Glassman and Rockbrain especially.
Yea!
