I hesitated in responding - I dont want to come across as saying that any one thing is right or wrong, but thought I'd share our experience.

When she first questioned us, we told her that since there are SO many children in the world today, Mommy and Daddy help Santa out. We are Santa's helpers because there was no way the elves could make all those toys! We told her what she found in her stocking was from Santa. She bought that for a time. Then when she got older (and friends insisted he was not real) we told her that at one time there *was* a real St. Nick (or Santa Claus, he's got alot of names). She seemed very pleased and to this day (she's 15) has not lost the Spirit of Santa. She is wonderful with her brother who has only discovered Santa in the last 2 years. :)

Awww, look at that shining face in the last photo! She's so stunning.

It's so interesting how different kids can be. We had the Santa conversation with my Rose last year -- had decided that when she asked the direct question we'd give the direct answer -- and it went without fireworks or waterworks. She was so proud of herself for figuring it out... We came to the conclusion that it was a beautiful tradition and we'd continue to play because we all enjoyed it so (and similarly with Tooth Fairy & Easter Bunny).

I love Katie's choice, though.

well...i'm afraid to stop believing quite honestly. in that sense, my 10 year old daughter seems WAY too mature. i think she says she believes for my sake. anyway, your blog is a gift and i thank you for it. also, for my new mental image of Santa. the one in the same old red suit, black boots, big belt buckle...with the contrast of a blue autism awareness bracelet. awesome. Best wishes for 2010 and beyond. keep writing!!!

Cousin,Jess: If parenting isn't the biggest ball of contradictions, I don't know what is. I always walk the thin, precarious line between too much truth and the right amount of truth. I found it amazing with my 1/2 Jewish 1/2 Catholic son at age 10 that he could know the truth about death, addiction, divorce, and bi-polar disorder yet still tell me that he hoped to sleep outside his bedroom so that he could get a picture of Santa. Thank goodness any amount of magic still exists for kids...
Love you, and thanks for the great writing!

In our house hold we choose to believe as well... especially Luke! He wouldn't have it any other way! He whispered to my belly this whole Christmas "Santa's Real" just to make sure that the baby would know :) So it doesn't matter if you're 8 or 28 or 98 :)
